Assortment Analysis
What is Assortment Analysis?
Assortment analysis is the systematic comparison of product ranges across retailers to understand overlap, gaps, and opportunities: which products competitors carry that you do not, where you are the exclusive seller, and how category depth compares. It extends competitive intelligence beyond price to the question of what is sold at all.
The analysis is built on crawled catalog data: each competitor's full product range is collected, matched where products overlap, and categorized. Typical findings include gap lists (high-demand items a competitor sells that you lack), exclusivity reports useful for margin strategy, and brand-share views showing which suppliers dominate a rival's category.
Retail buyers use assortment analysis in range reviews and supplier negotiations; brands use it to track distribution — which retailers actually list their products and how prominently.
